Lessons learned when having visitors

just say cheese!
I am really enjoying having various friends visiting us simultaneously-it adds a little variation.  Our friend Bob flew in today (his wife and my good friend Erica will join him tomorrow)  To celebrate “American Father’s Day”, we did a ‘manly’ sight seeing trip that involved a hike up a vineyard and 300 steps.  I really enjoy when my friends/family come to Germany to visit us, but am also taking note of some important lessons I am learning when guests are here with us….

Important notes for when having more than one person visiting you in Germany

call shot gun

  • Call “shot-gun” quickly or you will end up sitting in the trunk
  • Don’t get stuck holding other peoples water cups, cameras, purses, or coats… you are likely to end up balancing it while walking down 300 steps
  • Don’t try to look cute for your company -wearing high heels and hiking up a vineyard don’t mix
  • Don’t get distracted by your company while touring a cathedral…your children may be playing hide-n-seek under the 700 year old alter.
  • Take pictures of your guests taking pictures…it is very entertaining.
  • Tour sites you have already toured...they look different as the seasons change.
  • Be proud of the knowledge you have learned of the area you are touring and share it with your guests….even if they make fun of you being a ‘tour guide’
  • Don’t let your children laugh as your company tries to catch a breath when climbing up the vineyard- pretend like you have taught them better
  • If your children are getting cranky after hours of touring, buy them ice cream even if it is almost dinner time.
  • Most important be aware of the similarities of all countries and acknowledge the small things -like there are always rainbows…no matter what country you live in!
