Stuttgart's "Funky-lar"

How do you spend a cold rainy German holiday when most things are closed?  EASY- you play Yahtzee while sipping a glass of champagne.  Then (as you try to wipe the smirk off your face as you celebrate your win) you get the kids ready to take the train to ride another train!

“Alright guys, let’s head out to go see this Funky-lar” I hollered up the stairs.  At least that’s how I thought it was pronounced until Jason corrected my “southernese” as we headed out the door.  (he was still pouting over his loss)  As we were making our way to the train station Cooper asked, “Why are we taking a train to ride a train?”  Well, my boy, THAT is a good question…..

The train we were going to experience, better known as the Seilbahn Stuttgart, is a funiculare railway that opened in 1929.  It was originally built for people to use as transportation up the steep hill to the cemeteries.  As I was watching the trees go by out the window during our 3 minute ride up, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like in 1929, having to ride this train along with other ‘mourners’ going up to place flowers by a grave.  I am sure this train ride up felt much longer than 3 minutes.

As we exited the train, the forest greeted in the most peaceful manner and I then understood; the people that have made this journey up over the past 80 years, knew that a tiny piece of heaven was waiting for them as they visited their love ones and placed flowers on a grave out of remembrance.
