What makes Christmas.....

It will be our first Christmas, since having children, that we will not be at our own home.  So, breaking all tradition, we wrote Santa to ask if he could come a bit early.  As we begin our Christmas journey to Thailand, I have been pondering the question, "What "makes" Christmas, well, Christmas?"  I guess everyone has a different answer depending on your religion, country of origin, traditions or just what you hold in your heart surrounding this December holiday.

I, myself, believe that Christmas is all about believing.....believing that there is good in the world, believing that we have a choice in how we live our life, believing peace is possible and of course.... just plain ole believing in all of the magical and wonderful things that we can not explain or touch!

Our Christmases have changed since moving to Germany...We have started new traditions that may only last a few years and kept old ones.  And of course we have missed family and friends.  Even though there are many of our traditions we loved in America,  I do believe our Christmas time here in Germany is special and enjoy some thing that it is not...

It is not earfuls of advertising for the latest gadget beginning in September, it is not a ton of houses blinking and many to music, it is not getting tired of the radio's Christmas songs by October 2nd and it is definitely not being able to have a photograph made with Santa in the blink of an eye.

But I love what we do have here at Christmas....

The often spoken knowledge of  the real reason of the season , the hand carved nativity scenes in town that are festive without the lights, the festiveness of the Christmas markets, the donkeys in the manager that will bite...just ask Mike, the snow and sledding, the LIVE music playing on every street corner by young and old, the church bells ringing, the Christmas tree "shops" that don't even begin selling until the 9th of December, the excitement of receiving the Aigle rubber boats that will get much use here, chocolate...chocolate...chocolate, and most importantly....being together with my husband and children.

Yes, our traditions have changed somewhat, but what "MAKES" Christmas is in this family's hearts!  Merry Christmas!
